A removable partial denture is a device that replaces teeth that have been partially lost, to restore the smile masticatory function. It is removable so that it can be taken out and put back in at one's convenience. There is a wide range of partial dentures:
- Acrylic partial denture
Often used transitionally following surgery, this denture is inexpensive and can be prepared quickly. Made from acrylic resin and shaped hooks, it is known to be the least accurate, hence it's rather for temporary use.
- Flexible partial denture
Although similar to the acrylic partial denture, a flexible partial denture has aesthetic, non-metallic hooks. It is flexible, therefore much more resistant than acrylic. The downside is that it is irreparable. Its advantage? It's hypoallergenic.
- Acetalic partial denture
The frame of this partial is printed in 3D from compressed acrylic of the same colour as your teeth. It is highly precise and lightweight.
- Metallic partial denture
This is the most popular denture among patients. It has the rigidity of metal, allowing heat and cold to circulate. It is precision-manufactured from an anatomical-functional impression. It is the thinnest partial, and it has the advantage of being designed from a choice of two metals: chrome cobalt of titanium. Its biggest advantage is that it is personalized; its hooks can be made to be more aesthetically pleasing, either pink like the gums, white like teeth or clear.
In either case, it is important to consult with your dentist before choosing a partial denture. Dentures do not harm your natural teeth; as a matter of fact, they prevent teeth from migrating to adjacent teeth and evenly distribute chewing forces in your mouth.
